Fostering a love of reading is more than just an initiative at Huntington Beach City School District (HBCSD)—it’s a commitment that shapes the foundation of student success. With literacy at the heart of academic achievement, events like Read Across America are powerful reminders of the impact reading makes on a child’s future. On Friday, Peterson Elementary once again brought this vision to life with its 8th Annual Read Across America event, a highly anticipated tradition that fills classrooms with the magic of storytelling. This year’s event also marked the kickoff of Peterson’s 4th annual Read-a-thon. In this friendly competition, students and classrooms vie for the highest number of pages read and the most donations raised to support literacy initiatives.
Months of planning and coordination led up to this incredible day, ensuring that each classroom was filled with engaging stories, meaningful discussions, and excitement for reading. Nearly 50 guests—including community leaders, educators, and dedicated volunteers—stepped into classrooms, bringing books to life with animated readings and heartfelt conversations about the strength of stories. Laughter, wide-eyed wonder, and eager participation filled the air as students were transported into different worlds—some whimsical, some thought-provoking, all transformative.
Beyond the fun and festivities, the day reinforced an essential message: early literacy is a cornerstone of academic success. Research shows that children who develop strong reading skills early are far more likely to thrive in school and beyond. The Read-a-thon encourages students to embrace daily reading habits through classroom competition and promoting literacy at home, where families are encouraged to model the joy of reading together.
Capping off the celebration, Peterson’s kindergarten students took center stage for a heartwarming musical performance featuring cherished Dr. Seuss songs. Their lively singing and joyful enthusiasm served as the perfect finale to a festive day.
"Read Across America is a cherished tradition at our school, bringing joy and excitement to our students each year. This event would not have been possible without the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and the community's support,” said Peterson Principal Dr. Kevin Smith-Johnson. “ We are grateful to everyone who helped make this day so meaningful for our readers!"
